  • In New Zealand there are more than 900 multiple births per year with 15 sets of triplets. These numbers are increasing every year with older mothers and the improvement of fertility treatment. Between 1996 and 2001, the number of multiple births rose by 19%. 
  • One in every 80 births is a non identical twin. 
  • Women who have had non-identical twins are 4 times as likely to conceive twins again. 
  • One out of every three sets of twins are identical 
  • Boy/girl twin pairs cannot be identical 
  • Identical twins do not run in families although some studies are being done that may dispute this. 
  • Twins do not “skip generations but can be born in every generation. Fraternal twins tend to run in families to daughters from either parent 
  • Triplets can be identical and fraternal
  • The average length of a twin pregnancy is 36 weeks. 
  • Full term for a twin pregnancy is 38 weeks. 
  • The average length of a triplet pregnancy is 32 weeks.
  • Full term for triplets is 34 weeks.
